Aquantia release second-generation AQrate ethernet chip
Aquantia already leads the industry in NBASE-T ethernet chip design experience, having deployed six generations of 10Gigabit and Multi-Gigabit BASE-T products across multiple process nodes. Over the past two years, Aquantia has leveraged this experience to develop the second-generation AQrate devices, which feature the industry’s smallest footprint and highest level of functionality. Aquantia is still the only supplier of 5/2.5 Gigabit NBASE-T PHY shipping in production in a broad range of top-tier Enterprise switching and Access Point (AP) products.
Aquantia’s 1st generation AQrate product line, sampled in 2013 and released to production in 2014, achieved design wins with Tier 1 networking OEMs, who have already deployed several Wave 2 802.11ac WiFi APs and Enterprise-class Ethernet switches.
Aquantia’s breakthrough 2nd generation of AQrate products are poised to expand on this Tier 1 market success by enabling broader adoption of NBASE-T technology into the rapidly expanding Small and Medium-sized Business (SMB) and campus environments, including healthcare, industrial and education sectors.
Today, we live in a wonderful age where access points serve as the entryway to accessing data in all its forms from the cloud. An access point can now enable collaboration with teams across the globe as well as provide entertainment through streaming of media from distant servers. In many environments, access points are strained to keep up with this high output of user demand.
The market for 5 and 2.5GBASE-T is expected to expand rapidly, as evidenced by industry-leading system OEMs developing enterprise-class Wi-Fi APs and switching products in support of these emerging speeds. Dell’Oro Group projects that the industry’s shipment of 5/2.5GBASE-T will reach 86 million ports in 2020.
AQrate 28nm ethernet chip Product Family Available Today:
Quad-port configuration – AQR407, AQR408, and AQR409 are pin-compatible 5-, 4- and 3-speed quad-port PHYs housed in a 19mm x 19mm flip-chip BGA package enabling efficient high-density design for high-port-count and compact switches across a range of speed requirements.
Single-port configuration – The AQR107, AQR108, and AQR109 are pin-compatible 5-, 4- and 3-speed single-port PHYs in compact 7mm x 11mm flip-chip BGA packages addressing multiplenetwork connectivity applications and speed requirements. They operate over both Extended (0oC to +108oC) and Industrial (-40 oC to +108oC) temperature ranges.
The AQrate second generation of silicon features the smallest quad-port (19mm x 19mm) and smallest single-port (7mm x 11mm) Multi-Gigabit BASE-T devices in the industry. In addition, they also support up to 10Gigabit BASE-T. In comparison, quad-port and single-port devices from the competition are roughly 50% larger, leading to inefficient board designs and higher implementation costs.
As part of its feature set, these new-generation devices also support the IEEE MAC-layer security protocol, called MACSec, a key requirement for some Enterprise-class Ethernet switches. It also boasts the IEEE feature called 1588 v.2, an emerging requirement in some applications exploiting time-stamp functionalities.
In Enterprise deployments where access to power outlets can be challenging or costly, Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) is a welcome feature. AQrate products support all PoE standards up to 60W. Similarly, as multi-Gigabit Ethernet expands beyond traditional enterprise-type of products and into SMB and industrial, the operating temperature range becomes more varied. Aquantia’s second-generation single-port line of products supports industrial temperature ranges from -40°C to +108°C.
